1. Availability and Experience

Experience is one of the most important things to consider when selecting a wedding planner. Because it doesn’t matter if your wedding is intimate or grand, a wedding planner should have the capability to manage the event smoothly. You should also ask if he/she is available on your wedding date.

• How long have you been a wedding planner?
• How many weddings have you planned in our area/style?
• Can you describe the most challenging wedding you’ve planned and how you handled it?

2. Services Offered and Communication

Every couple has their own ideas for their wedding. So, it is very necessary to ask your wedding planner about the kind of services they provide. Wedding planners offer a variety of packages in a wedding package. There are certain sets of services which you don’t want. So ask if there is a provision to customize the wedding package.

• What services do you offer within your packages? (full planning, partial planning, day-of coordination)
• Can you customize a package to fit our needs and budget?
• How will we communicate (email, phone, meetings)?
• How often can we expect to hear from you?

3. Budget and Vendor Management

Give them an idea about your budget and try to understand whether they are able to work within that budget. You can ask for their associated vendors like wedding photographers, caterers, wedding decorators, florists etc.

• Will you work within our budget?
• How do you handle budgeting and unexpected costs?
• Do you recommend vendors, or do we choose them?
• Will you help us negotiate contracts with vendors?

4. Day-of Coordination and Contingency Plans

Understand their working style and about their team members. Wedding management is a team work, if they don’t have enough team members then it’s going to be a tough call to hire a wedding planner for your big day.

• Will you be present on the wedding day and for the rehearsal?
• How many staff members will be there on the day-of?
• What happens if a vendor cancels at the last minute?
• Do you have a backup plan for bad weather?

5. Additional Considerations

Feel free to ask them about their past projects just to make sure what kind of weddings they have managed so far. You can ask about their payment process also like is there any provision to do the payments in installments or you have to do it upfront.

• Are you certified by any wedding planning associations?
• Can you provide us with references from past clients?
• What is your cancellation policy?
• What is your payment schedule?

Understand your wedding planner by gathering their ideas and sharing your preferences. You have to open up with them so that they understand your choice and taste better.
